Jaw Deformities

Jaw Deformities or dentofacial deformities result from an imbalance of the size, shape, position and orientation of the upper and lower jaws. They are a very common condition and range from minor defects to major deformities that can be corrected surgically.

Causes

The causes of jaw deformities vary and in some cases are unknown. Some of the common causes are

    • Lower jaw or upper jaw or both may grow too much or too little resulting in improper teeth alignment and malocclusion. This may be an inherited condition

    • Genetic factors

    • Trauma

    • Certain birth defects such as cleft lip and cleft palate

Symptoms

    • Inability to chew, swallow, speak and breathing difficulties resulting in sleep apnea

    • Temperomandibular joint pain and degeneration of joints, joint clicking

    • Have a negative effect on facial appearance

    • Impaired long term health of jaws and gums
